Made in the 216

This past weekend I attended a fantastic event called Made in the 216, which was created to celebrate and showcase the talents of designers in Northeast Ohio (area code 216).

The brainchild of Danielle DeBoe, owner of home goods boutique Room Service, the show felt more like a party than a shopping trip, with live music, plenty of PBR, and masses of design-savvy souls.

At the event, I was introduced to the beautiful, diminuitively-scaled jewelry of Modern Pixie and even had a chance to speak with the the line's designer, Judy Crighton, who couldn't have been sweeter. Her work is all about the details - many pieces include teeny tiny "pixie-ish" elements. The earrings I bought feature a tiny silver leaf/feather swinging from a skinny, bright yellow glass bead - I think they would look so striking with pale, muted clothing in shades of pink or apricot.

Other standout goods included pillows from Baseline (above) and stationery and prints by Grey Cardigan (below), among many, many others.

I spotted these excellent business cards (below) printed en masse on a ticket roll and later found they were designed by my good friend Charity Ewanko of Chartreuse (who also shared some of her event pics with me for this post).

Finally, I had to share a better view of the enormous canopy of crepe paper "poufs" created by Danielle DeBoe - truly a gorgeous element that exemplified the exuberant atmosphere of the show. I can't wait for the next one.

Friends in design, our prayers for periodicals are finally being answered!

Lonny is an online decorating and lifestyle magazine soon-to-be-launched by Rubie Green designer Michelle Adams and her business partner, photographer Patrick Cline.

Uncontrollable burst of excitement out of the way, I now have to calmly wait until September for the premiere issue, and in the meantime start my subscription to Uppercase magazine (as recommended by Emily). But with this talented duo at the helm of Lonny, I am confident it will be well worth the wait!

Beauty + Style + Function = Bags by MIMS

My first glimpse of this Nap Sack/Shoulder Bag by Maine-based Etsy seller, MIMS, was in a recent Etsy Finds newsletter (sign up for those here)... I think the pattern of this particular Summer Birds fabric was what initially caught my eye, but then, upon closer inspection, I realized that the construction & "format" of the bag is pure genius...

The straps can either be doubled together to carry by hand or on a shoulder, or, with just the pull of a couple of lovely leather cuffs, the straps can be spread apart to allow you to carry your handbag as a backpack! Perfect!

no worries :: just don't tell anyone they're CROCS

I know I'm not the only one who thinks CROCS are just plain ugly.

When they first came out, I felt a bit, um... offended. I felt like a little bit of the fashion world died with every pair sold. Despite numerous people telling me that they're really comfortable, I still can't get over how orthopedic they look; they're far to chunky on the foot; and, to me, they seem a bit clown-ish...

Then CROCS started making what I call "CROCS Without Shame" - the company made a genius move taking many of the most positive features of the original clogs and adapting them into a wider, more fashionable range of styles. In short, I bought a pair.

Even though spending the whole day with Jw was really present enough, I was really excited that part of my celebratory day off on Friday was a long-overdue visit to adorable gift shop (and OrangeBeautiful stockist), KOMODA.

KOMODA :: located at 2559 W. Chicago Avenue in the Ukranian Village

I've been dying for months and months to make it down to this shop, and I gotta tell you, if I lived closer, I'd be there all the time - There's so much great stuff :: greeting cards & stationery; wallets & bags; awesome things for kids; perfumes, lotions & soaps - just everything you'd want to browse around in, give as gifts, and take home with you!

If you're in Chicago - or making a trip here soon - definitely head to the SE corner of Chicago & Rockwell... just seeing the amazing fixtures and drawer units* is worth the visit!

*Sherri, the owner, told me that "komoda" is Polish for "chest of drawers"!

As part of his course work, grad student Alex Cornell created an amazingly authentic-looking design package for a hypothetical Wes Anderson Film Festival.

Each piece seems to perfectly capture the W.A. aesthetic, and the copy he created is such fun to read. I can't even imagine how many hours went into this - but the end results are fascinating.

Check out the full suite of promotional items, including posters, DVD covers and packaging, advertisements, schedules, tickets - even iPod and iPhone skins - and best of all, marvel at the trailer he created for the project (this is, after all, a "film festival").

Excellent patterns

Busy pattern can sometimes overwhelm a room, but the examples here show how it can be tempered with the right balance of large-scale furnishings and color to create an elegant effect.

In the two images above, pattern framed between and within massive bookshelves has a sophisticated feel.

As shown above and below, large-scale pattern is nicely offset by a wash of bold color - this gives the pattern room to breathe, and provides an impactful element to balance the busy-ness. (I'm always tempted to try wallpaper and these examples demonstrate how it might fit well into my more streamlined aesthetic!)

As a creator of my own 12-notebook set (tol be re-released later this year!)... I'm feeling a special affinity for this concept from designers, Burak Kaynak and cem has :: the Sliced Bread/Notebook.

Information & photos of this design project (and many others) are a part of The Behance Network - "a platform for creative portfolios, projects, and collaborations"... somewhat similar to notcot in its layout & content, this site is much more of a professional network for designers; a way for them to show off their work and yet-to-be-actualized ideas.

I'm hoping that these 'bread books' make it to the production line... I think they'd sell like hotcakes!

80's Style :: a color study for Tess...

It's no secret that I'm obsessed with color... in my clothes, in my home, in my work. So when new OB client, Tess, came to me about some business cards (she's a web designer) and requested "an 80's Punk Rock feel," well, you can just imagine that my mind immediately started putting together color palettes.

The key I think will be coming up with a color combination that isn't absurd, but still has that pop that 80's style is known for. My thoughts early on are to combine a base neutral (like grey) with a rich & vivid pink and a shocking neon green.

These pics of Lady Gaga from the latest issue of FLAUNT Magazine are a good start to get the ball rolling in the right direction... I'll keep you posted as our business card project progresses!

I categorized this post under fav designers, but Tim Burton is so much a designer as a visionary genius - I don't think I've really ever met a Tim Burton movie that I didn't like (okay, except Cabin Boy ;)

And even though I still love the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory over Burton's 2005 adaptation Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I'm really, really excited for next year's release of Alice In Wonderland.

This might sound a little weird, but I have to share this association I'm having lately with my summer pecicure polish color, OPI's You Don't Know Jacques.

The deep taupe - which feels like a lighter, fresher take on the dark aubergine that I usually wear in the fall/winter - totally reminds me of Heath Ceramics' earthy-toned vessels. Pictured top: Summer Budvases; bottom: Modern Cups in "birch".

a Festivus for the rest of us :: UPPERCASE Mag!

Just when I thought no one was ever going to make a magazine for me ::

design-obsessed, style-conscious, craft-loving, business-minded, etc...

Janine Vangool of the already-awesome UPPERCASE Gallery in Calgary, Alberta, Canada (you Canadians are SO fabulous!) begins publishing UPPERCASE Magazine ::

I'll admit I held out on subscribing for a little while, but then I found myself obsessively looking at pics of the magazine online. Then I heard that the first issue contains interviews with Julie & Kathryn of perfectbound and the husband & wife team from enormouschampion... not to mention music reviews, how-tos, and fashion spreads - well, how could I not have that mailed to my house four times a year?!

If you're feeling a space needing to be filled where your Blueprint or Domino used to be and you, like me, love ReadyMade and Craft... UPPERCASE is a blissful combination of all of those, with just a dash of HOW and a mix of your favorite design blogs - all in a beautifully-printed package.

In short, what I'm saying is that I feel completely reinvigorated by the inception of this publication. I had all but given up home on a magazine being something I really got excited about; something that I felt would both inspire and inform - and look good doing it.

Well done, Janine. I sincerely cannot wait to receive Issue No.2!

Or at least that's how I feel wearing my new Black White Shrug from Los Angeles-based designer, PINaR ERIS. I'm definitely a big fan of stripes - especially the bold contrast of B&W stripes - and I had been searching for a lighterweight, "jacket-ish" piece that I would be versatile enough that I could wear it with a t-shirt and shorts, but stylish and unique enough that I could dress it up as well...

and I found it!

Nothing is better than a good...

So, I'm sufficiently relaxed. A week away (with NO distractions) was just what the doctor ordered (literally ;) - Jw and I took an 18-hour train ride to and from Denver, CO, and quite honestly, I feel like Amtrak is the only way to travel. We really hate the hustle and bustle of airports and flying, and the train fare was actually super-cheap in comparison. The best part was that it was just a fun experience to ride cross-country, see the sights, sleep on fold-out seats, have dinner & conversation with other passengers in the dining car... and the coffee they served was delicious! - What could be better?

We spent our days laying around the cabin (which you can see on the left of the pic above), taking photos of wildlife (my new favorite animal, elk, are shown above & below), and really just enjoying some serious rest and relaxation...

The versatility of LACK

Oh, how I love the LACK bookcase. Straightforward, impressively scaled and incredibly well-priced. I admire how Michelle Adams styled hers, as pictured in Australian shelter mag Real Living (be sure to see the rest of her home here.

At our house, the LACK bookcase's first incarnation was as nursery storage. This photo shows the bookcase perfectly set up - obviously, in the early stages before Catherine could play with the items on it!

Recently we've been using it in our family room, primarily to house the storage bins where we keep Catherine's toys. I'd love to know: how do you style your LACK? Please feel free to share any images by posting a link in the comments...

Stash Style :: vintage decor

Stash Style is a fabulous home goods shop located in the adorable town of Chagrin Falls, Ohio. Recently the shop acquired an entire warehouse of vintage store display fixtures, party decorations, bolts of exquisite fabrics and papers, which will be sold in their new Etsy shop. Currently the shop is filled with vintage paper honeycomb party decorations of different sizes, colors and shapes! Check Stash Style on Etsy frequently for silk flowers, paper lanterns, felt borders, and such from the early 20�s up to now. What a fantastic party resource! (And doesn't the pic above look like a Kate Spade ad?)

Dining inspiration

This dining room by Richard Mishaan employs floor-to-ceiling art that makes the room feel simultaneously cozy and stimulating. Even with so much happening on the walls, the details of the furnishings and rug unexpectedly stand out and become almost like pieces of sculpture and art themselves. The subdued wall color, ceiling-height draperies and overhead light allow the eye to roam the walls unobstructed. With a story to each piece, the stage is set for engaging conversation, and the collection looks so impactful when presented as a unit. If I eventually have a formal dining room, I would love to create in it a similar "gallery" feel.

I'm not one to gush over a tea towel... but just look at these colors! These Earl Grey tea towels are available in (3) colorways (Pink, Blue & Green) from Jonathan Adler...

There are three other patterns (here), but the Earl Grey is definitely my favorite. (I'm not gonna lie... I'd love to have a skirt made out of the green one!)

Even though my daughter won't wear them until maybe a year from now, I couldn't resist. Her reaction? "Ooh, fancy!"

In the meantime, she has been sporting these comfy and pretty maryjane-inspired Crocs, a gift from her aunt...I wish the grown-up version looked as cute on my feet as they do on hers.

I guess it's pretty obvious how much I love typography... you could probably even say that I'm a bit obsessed.

Given that, it won't be too shocking to hear that I'm loving this Type Tray over at Veer - it's a 3/4" piece of industrial felt, laser-cut with a stunning typography design (using the fonts, Kilkenny and Cavetto, which are both for sale on Veer)... Its actual purpose is to place between your laptop and your lap, to absorb the heat from your computer's motor.

I already own this bit of genius - so I think I'd just hang my Type Tray on the wall as a piece of art!

Normally, I feel pretty inconvenienced by rainy days... I really prefer to walk to work (or at least take the train), so when it's wet outside, it makes my trip just a tiny bit less enjoyable. And it seems that my complete immunity to rain, which I developed after living in Glasgow, Scotland for a semester in college (10 years ago!), has all but disappeared.

But now, thanks to the lovely, kattyface over at designvagavond, I want one of these awesome Cappuccio capelets from Italian clothing & accessories brand, Sartoria Vico... maybe having one of these to wear with help me rekindle my love (or at least my tolerance) of inclement weather ::

I'd wear this when it wasn't even raining!

I think I let out a little yelp when I spotted this Resin-links bracelet in the (beautiful) new J.Crew catalog. The clunkiness of the giant links and oversize toggle are fabulously lightened by the unexpected, translucent material...and the color is perfect. And I don't see how my daughter could destroy it. And hurrah, it's less than $40!

I will wear it every day.

Given the state of the economy, a good deal of people have been doing a lot of simplifying... myself included. When money gets tight, we often focus in on the things that really make us happy. Yes, a lot of those things involve not spending a cent, but what about those purchases that sometimes do, in fact, add a little something to your space, your work, your life...

Happy Memorial Day...

Long weekends are extremely nice, aren't they? Especially when the weather is as beautiful as it has been here in Chicago over the last few days... But more often than not, long weekends are due to the national observance of something much more important and profound than a day off work to drink beer and get the grill going. The greatest realization, though, seems to be finding the balance between strict, solemn observance and truly enjoying the freedoms that we do have because of those that have fought on our behalf throughout history.

These (now 2-year old) ending remarks from Michel Martin (via NPR), sum things up nicely, I think ::

Before Memorial Day became the day to compare notes about beach traffic, to open the pool, to catch the first summer sales, it was the day to remember those who died while in the nation's service. It was originally called Decoration Day. And while the origins of customs like this are always disputed, it seems pretty clear that the custom of setting aside a day to honor the nation's war dead started in the 1860s, around the time of the Civil War.

Maybe the families started it. Maybe it was those once-removed, who wanted to find a way to show their respect and gratitude for the sacrifice made by the few for the sake of the many. Interesting that this day of commemoration is rooted in a time of such division. Even now there is the inevitable tension and distance between the two meanings of the day: on the one hand, those who just want and need a day to relax, and those who want and need a day to mourn. There's a human need for both � for refreshment and celebration, for pause and remembrance.

But it seems fitting that those who are not carrying the burden of grief should pause to remember those who do.

So, to the men and women who are serving around the world, to the families who support them, we thank you.

Whether you're taking the day off work to honor veterans at a community event or to relax with your friends & family - or even if you didn't take the day off at all - use this holiday as a way to pause for a moment and remember what you have and why you have it. Think positively about what is good in your life and why you are lucky... and use those feelings to be better to yourself and those around you - all year long.

My daughter is just about to enter the age where, for a lot of kids, creating art becomes a favorite pasttime. Some of my earliest memories involve drawing and coloring images of babies and families (likely commemmorating the arrivals of my baby brother and sister), then graduating to Spirograph and Fashion Plates, weekend art classes and trips to the art museum.

Even if my daughter doesn't catch the art bug like I did, I imagine she will love these crayon stones for her introduction to coloring. They're designed to feel good in little hands (and even promote the proper grip for penmanship!), are made of soy wax, and are simply interesting to behold.

Friends who know me well will giggle a little at the thought of my desiring any sort of sporting-related equipment. However, I might just have gone to heaven because I spotted the Madsen Cargo Bike and suddenly want to bike and tote everything. Is it the amazingly large basket? The retro styling? Yes, but I'll be honest - mostly it's the pale blue color, and the thought of taking my daughter around town "outdoors" (her new favorite word), that has me aching for this bike.

In a random association, the available colors remind me of Nigella Lawson's kitchenware collection, which I love...

The Tonight Show :: not just a new host...

In addition to its major hosting change (from Jay Leno to Conan O'Brien) on June 1st, The Tonight Show is also undergoing quite a re-brand ::

Oh, and, just for reference, here's the current logo that will be retired ::

The new one is a vast improvement, if you ask me.

+Plus, the new logo design (the "with Conan O'Brien" part) is using one of my favorite fonts, Bernhard Gothic... and "The Tonight Show" is in a typeface called Neutraface No.2 Display Inline, in case you were wondering ;)

Even better is this quote from Conan about the thought behind the new logo ::

"I wanted a logo that acknowledged the long, rich tradition of The Tonight Show while still looking good on hats, T-shirts, mugs, lawn furniture, notebooks, stemware, urns, defibrillators, water bottles, cell phones, sports equipment, pens, vacuums, chimes and our new line of unisex cologne."

Love it... Conan and the logo.
