I'll be the first to admit that I do not do holidays... I'm not one to decorate - even for Christmas - and, in the last 5 years, Jw and I have only had one Christmas tree, and it wasn't even a real tree: it was drawn on a chalkboard wall!

Blame it on my mom's ongoing bird phobia, but I've avoided bird-anything my entire life. When birds were everywhere in design a few years ago I sort of quietly shunned the trend. Which is why I can't entirely explain my attraction to Anthropologie's insane Conure round rug, above, and Trot Home's flamboyant ceramic birds, below.

The 5-foot diameter rug would be perfect for our upstairs hallway, which I describe as a "satellite" hallway (I'm sure there's an architectural term, and that's not it) where the rooms all radiate off a hexagonal, central landing. The colors in the rug would tie together all the wall colors of our bed and bathrooms.

And for some reason I'm seeing those pink birds on my mantle! (I'm sure this would drive my poor mother crazy whenever she visits...)

I can tell my body is more than ready for Spring--I crave citrus. It's the strangest thing, but every year, I *need* to have grapefruit, orange, tangerine - anything citrusy the first few weeks of Spring.

Maybe it's the punch of color, or that tangy sweetness, but how can you resist it? Ok, maybe if you have stomach ulcers it could be problematic. In that case, drink some tea and I hope you're better ;)

Metropolitan Home: Gone, but never forgotten

Many moons ago I commuted to Chicago's North Shore for work and had two 55 minute train rides each day to either work, read or sleep. Reading usually won out, and I still recall finding my first issue of Metropolitan Home on a vacant seat. It was the Design 100 issue, and inside was the round up of the best of the best. Innovative buildings by architects, modern layouts by interior designers and home related products and gadgets that were amazingly creative or stylish were all included.

I would study those pages and designers, some of which I could easily relate to, and others whose work couldn't be further from my aesthetic, but you had to respect their boldness and passion.

Sadly, the last Design 100 was printed in June 2009, and Met Home ceased operation in November 2009. That vacancy is still felt, but wait, all is not lost!

Michael Lassell, former Features Director and three other Met Home Art Department veterans (Keith D'Mello, Jeff Felmus, and Cathyrne Czubek) combined their talents and substantive archive to create DESIGN 100: The Last Word on Modern Interiors.

Their goal was to create a sourcebook of great ideas for home design featuring houses, apartments, lofts or rooms that feature the best of 'something'. While numbered, they don't indicate rank or a hierarchy, just something that was so fabulous, they really, really wanted you to see it!

Available from Filipacchi Publishing, The SCOOP was fortunate to receive a review copy to peruse.

Just when I think I couldn't possibly like Anthropologie more, they get all clever and create a haven for the home fashions lover. 'For the Decorator' was officially launched yesterday on their web site as as well twelve concept stores: Atlanta, Beverly Hills, Chicago, Corte Madera, CA, Denver, Houston, London, UK, Miami, Nashville, NYC, Wayne, PA and Westport, CT.

The in-store studio features an excellently curated selection of wallpaper, window covers, rugs, hardware and bedding as well as expanded selection of books and magazines, all related to home decorating and design.

Shoppers not near one of the twelve in-store studios have plenty of interactive features available on-line where you can visually mix and experiment with their products popped onto sample furniture, windows etc. The glossary below is a great resource for design terms, fashioned in that insanely quaint Anthro style!

Always the book fiend, I'm especially curious to check out the dedicated selection of decor books, including the up-coming book, Decorate. Co-written by Holly Becker of the fabulous Decor8, and Joanna Copestick, a lifestyle writer, it features Kelly Wearstler, Amy Butler, Jonathan Adler as well as up and coming designers with 1,000 tips for each room of the house and every budget. I think I need to plan a field trip to the Chicago location to check it out, snap some photos and let you know what I think!

The latest catalog from our beloved Anthropologie has transported me back to my college days when a good portion of my time was spent in the library, poring over handmade flash cards of Xeroxed images of significant works in art history.

From Wikipedia ::

In Spanish art, a bodeg�n is a still life painting depicting pantry items, such as victuals, game, and drink, often arranged on a simple stone slab, and also a painting with one or more figures, but significant still life elements, typically set in a kitchen or tavern.

Anthropologie has done a lovely job of invoking this significant painting style from 17th-century Spain. HOME Style: A family affair

I first came across Robert and Cortney Novogratz several years back in an issue of 'O at Home'. This photo really caught my attention because they accented the traditional architecture in such a fresh and interesting way. I dissected every other photo in the piece and was really intrigued by their unique approach to design. Odds are you've since seen their work or heard about their beautiful seven children: Tallulah, Robert, Five, Cortney, Wolfgang, Major, Bellamy, Hollander and Breaker on Bravo TV's 9 by Design.

For the last ten years, these self taught design 'mavericks' have taken a whole new approach to reviving defunct structures (old gun store anyone) with their own style of Vintage Nouveaxx. The end result has been innovative, artistic and visually interesting homes that have found a rapid following.

After welcoming their seventh child last year, they managed to write and launch a book named Downtown Chic detailing their design journey and favorites projects along the way.

Well good news! HGTV has confirmed that filming is underway for another new show, 'Home by Novogratz'. It is a 30 minute show highlighting current residential projects and how they find their inspiration in decor, art, and how they actually raise seven kids in Manhattan! I find them fascinating and inspiring to watch, and wondering how they make it all happen.

I'm not sure why, but recently I've had a thing for all things patent leather.... It may have something to do with having a shiny item that looks kinda fancy, but then, when you pour your latt� down your front, your bag wipes clean in one pass... elegant-yet-practical.

I'm very happy that warmer temperatures have arrived, but after record-setting snowfall and "the blizzard of the century", there's a lot of snow that needs to melt. Most of the waist-high piles are probably going to stick around well into April, but the rest of that snow has turned into impassable rivers at most of the crosswalks and muddy puddles at every turn.

So, even though the weather is "nice" today (the high is supposed to be near 60˚F), there's still a lot of muck and nonsense out there...

How to cope? Think about some more pleasant (and stylish) things involving dripping, melting and giant pools of standing water ::

You might recall Kat's post back in April of last year, where she mentioned the future possibility of a wedding off-shoot from SCOOP-fav, Anthropologie... well, believe it or not, February 2011 has arrived, and the official launch of BHLDN will be in just a little over a week... appropriately enough, this Valentine's Day, Monday, February 14th.

While BHLDN (which I'm pretty sure is pronounced beholden) is clearly connected to Anthropologie, it should not be confused as being a product line that will be a part of Anthro's stores... the division is simply another piece under the giant umbrella of Urban Outfitters (which covers Anthropologie, Free People, Urban Outfitters stores, and now, online wedding boutique, BHLDN).

If you've listened to or read any news in the past 24 hours, it'll be no surprise to you to hear that we got a little bit of snow here last night...

It didn't turn out to be quite the snow-pocalypse that they were predicting, but it's certainly got the city at a bit of a standstill.

We woke up to snow up to the seats of the patio furniture in our backyard, and a nearly impassable front stoop at the front of the house ::

The walk to the store (yes, we are open... 'til 4pm today!) was pretty awesome. People have been walking around in the middle of the street, taking photos... and skiing! Honestly, if I had skis, I'd be out there with them!

If you're in an area that got hit by the snow, definitely get out an enjoy what you can... it's quite beautiful, and lots of fun to stomp around in!

Tiny book favors

Every two months, I get together with some girls in my neighborhood and play Bunco. (This tells you just how "suburban" I really am!) It's really an excuse to get together, eat food, drink wine and celebrate whatever season is going on. This month, Bunco's theme is Valentine's Day and I did the party favors.

I found the tiny Kraft hardcover journals at Pat Catans. I cut out some blush paper, wrote "Love" in orange-red calligraphy, and Xyron-ed the paper to the books. I covered the mini-golf pencils (from Staples) in some red chrysanthemum paper cut 1-inch wide by the length of the pencil. I painted some Mod Podge onto the paper strips and rolled the pencils into them - easy.

Finally, I used the Xyron again to make some simple rectangular strips from the chrysanthemum paper to loosely close the glassine bags. I had so much fun making these - and they were so simple - that I will probably make more and mail them out for Valentine's Day!

I spy new things to SCOOP about!

This week I had the fun opportunity to attend The Chicago Market�s Living & Giving Show at the Merchandise Mart here in Chicago. As the nation�s largest and premiere showroom facility, this event showcased the newest products for home accents, gift items, and handcrafted goods. I wanted to learn more about the wholesale to retail process of how thousands of options are presented, which are bought, and ultimately offered to us as consumers to choose from at our favorite businesses.

It was four floors of hundreds of vendors and roughly three hours in, it was already stimulation overload! Colors, textures and amazing showroom displays were at every turn, but I persevered. ;)

In the next few posts, I�ll highlight some fantastic products that caught my eye by being practical, inventive products I would love to give as gifts or use myself.

This first of which is definitely designed for me as a tech junkie and someone who is brutally hard on their phone. I drop it several times per day and and frankly am lucky I haven�t driven over it at this point.

Techcandy is a product line that stood out from the hundreds of options for an iPhone and iPad. Previously I�ve lauded my love of the Chilliwich case, but I even managed to fray the edges on that, so time for a sturdy, yet stylish replacement.

Well, well, they�ve thought of everything here haven�t they? Each fantastic graphic option comes with two silicone cases that you can use solo, or clip on the polycarbonate case and I�m in LOVE.

Candy is right! Look how yummy these things are!

Just a plain silicone case won�t cut it for me, and most importantly I want something that I won�t be tired of looking at for the next year or two.

I�ve narrowed down my two favorite as the Barcelona and the New York. The colors are so fresh and clean as a backdrop against the white graphic. It makes me want lemonade.

Definitely reminiscent of this amazing photo from Laura�s previous post of her sister�s wedding, non?

Prices are $29.99 for the phone case and $45.99 for the iPad case. Pretty good deal, I think.

First, my apologies for the extra-long hiatus. Been super-busy, but ready to share some amazing things that have been on my radar!

Bold faceted stones in nature-inspired shades of smoke and water, enveloped by piles of chains. A silhouette shaped in the form of a waterfall. Opalescent baubles that catch the light as they peek out of a nest of silver. Appealing simultaneously to my penchant for feminine and nature-inspired jewels, Ellen Arthur - a unique new voice in the accessories market - has completely stolen my heart. The designer behind the brand, Ellen Flood, happens to be my sister-in-law's close friend, and she provided me with behind-the-scenes info on her process and creative inspirations - as well as a piece of my own!

After a stint in a corporate job, Ellen took some evening fashion classes, and then began to make jewelry for an upscale Chicago clothing boutique as a creative outlet. Her designs soon evolved into a collection (the latter part of her line's name - Arthur - is her Dad's middle name), and incorporated such materials as gunmetal and antiqued brass chains with quartz stones, oxidized pearls, and feathers. A close watcher of fashion, Ellen notes trends that inspire and very carefully mixes them. Case in point: this spring's stunningly gorgeous pieces feature very fine gold and silver chains alongside pastel-hued pearls in often asymmetrical, "imperfect" arrangements.

Perhaps it is exactly this air of imperfection that makes these pieces so wearable. Ellen (who, in addition to being obviously talented, is also incredibly beautiful herself as well as sweet and funny), graciously offered to send me something from her line. The Hannah necklace that I chose very quickly rose to my never-take-it-off, wear-it-for-every-occasion, go-to accessory. The gray quartz and gunmetal chains perfectly compliment my everyday pieces, though the sparkly, faceted stones also function as standout elements with a dressier ensemble. The length of the piece is such that I can wear it with a basic tank, which is my ultimate layering piece for winter warmth. I particularly like the look of the Hannah juxtaposed with something soft and wooly, like my oversize, oatmeal-colored knitted cape, above.

In addition to the just-launched Spring 2011 collections (see here and here), Ellen plans to expand the line with the addition of a production assistant, but likes the personal quality of a smaller brand - noting that handmade jewelry has a certain feel that can't be mass-produced. I couldn't agree more, and can't wait to expand my own collection of Ellen Arthur pieces (perhaps the Laura bib necklace!).

The ever talented group at Kravet/Lee Jofa are behind some of the most amazing fabrics, furnishings and trims for the trade. Their featured designers are behind the luscious puddles of drapes, graphic pillows and furniture that catch my eye and have me scramble to the resource pages of House Beautiful and Elle Decor not only to see who designed it, but if there is any possibility of acquiring it at a non-hedge fund manager's budget.

As we approach the 8-month anniversary of the shop, I want to be sure that I don't ever let things with the company settle down or fall into a rut. There a quite a few new things brewing at OrangeBeautiful right now: a completely revamped website, new product lines, changes & additions to the blog... The ball really started rolling just this morning, with the installation of our outside sign and awning!

Resolution No. 1 :: Eat More Cupcakes

While the typical new year's resolutions may be to get organized, or exercise more (both are on my list), I'm also planning on focusing on things that just make me happy...

so, my first resolution is to eat more cupcakes.

California-based Sprinkles has opened up a Chicago location (at 50 E Walton St, between Michigan & Rush), and it couldn't be more lovely.

I really love when a business takes full advantage of the power of good design. Everything from the amazing grid of "cupcake tops" on the store's outside wall to the custom-branded wooden cutlery to the color-coded flavor schedule... each element ties in to an overall aesthetic which just, well, makes you want to buy cupcakes. Genius.

It also doesn't hurt that the product is delicious. We took home a box of four: Banana, Chocolate Marshmallow, Lemon & Mocha. I'm a huge fan of cupcakes that are flavorful, but not too sugary-sweet. These do not disappoint... I think the Banana is my favorite, but we'll definitely be going back to try the Chai Latte, the Chocolate Coconut, a Pumpkin, and a Red Velvet (among others ;) -

If you're not in Chicago, there are several other locations to visit - and if you're out of their delivery/shipping area entirely, you can still buy their cupcake mix and make your own!

The Luxury of Ribbons

It's well into December and as gifts you've carefully selected for others are making their way into your homes, presenting the presents is the next step.

I love wrapping gifts, and the selection of wrap, ribbon, trim and adornments available is better than ever. From thrift shops and craft stores, to The Container Store's Gift Wrap Wonderland and local merchants, there are endless options of color coordinated wrap, boxes and bows to help you present a beautifully wrapped gift.

However, I realize not of all you share in my gift wrapping delight, but there are ways I may be able to persuade you...today's focus is on the beautiful, colorful and texture filled array of ribbons.

Imagine this burst of color as a topper on a box with your name on it. Known as a cockade, this element of folding layers of ribbon dates back to the 17th century and traditionally adorned hats and lapels. It soon became used as a political statement to wear colors associated with one's support or protest of government ideas and movements. Thankfully, it's again appreciated for the intricate folds and decorative features on hats, ornaments and just that perfect little box.

All of these lush images of satin bows and sparkly accents are the work of Nicholas Kniel who founded Nicholas Kniel Fine Ribbons & Embellishments in Atlanta in 2000. Known as the resource for unusual ribbons, feathers and trim, his shop features over 4,000 spools of ribbon! Road trip anyone?!

Nicholas, along with Timothy Wright, penned Ribbon, The Art of Adornment. It's a detailed history of ribbons, their use in decor and offers delicious photographs and inspiration. (Note, it is not a how-to book).

Locally, be sure to check out Soutache Ribbons & Bows in Bucktown. They offer rows and rows of wonderful ribbon options.

Of course, Orange Beautiful has a great assortment of grosgrain stitched ribbon by the yard, as well as Divine Twine. They will even wrap it all up for you!
